Gulmarg is famed for being home to one of the world’s largest ropeways with an aerial distance of approx. 4.5 km. Situated around 3979 m above sea level, the views that you get from the top are just breathtaking. Snowfall here is regular at this time of the year, thereby giving every traveller a fair chance to experience the winter magic!
Although it is known for being a war-ground between India and Pakistan because of the Kargil War of 1999, it has now become a sought-after tourist destination with historical significance. Also, since it acts as a gateway to Leh, most travellers like to stop by Kargil, and explore the region, on the way to Leh. This place is also home to many temples and monasteries that are worth a visit.
Pangong Lake:
Pangong Lake turns magical during the month of January. And, by the end of the month, the lake freezes completely, and remains like that until February. The only challenge on this route is the Chang La Pass. You can opt to enjoy a day trip and stay either at Spangmik, Tangtse, or Merak. Do note that campsites don’t remain open during the winter, so you can choose either a homestay in either of the said villages.
